I was just a kid when I first started "testing" methods to get free satellite tv. It first started with emulators, then electronic boards (ie: atmega, avr, etc.). It was quite long struggle to learn all these techniques but there are so many people on chat rooms and discussion boards that are just willing to help you out. Here, I'm talking about the old fashioned way, now if you want to have free satellite tv with all the channels and pay per view, you buy one of those FTA boxes (Free-to-air). That's where the "easy" word takes all it sense. All you have to do is to modify the internal software with a file provided by the gurus at any website focused on satellite testing.
You are probably asking yourself, why shouldn't I get one of these FTA boxes? Well, the FTA receiver itself is not illegal, you can easily find one on eBay for less than 200$ for standard definition, or around 400$ for HDTV. These devices are not made for piracy, but where it becomes illegal is when you modify the internal software in order to decrypt the satellite signal provided by companies like Bell Expressvu or Dish Network. Originally they were made to get the free channels, but developers have been making internal software files in order to decrypt the nagra2 encryption to get the "scrambled" channels. Replacing that internal file with the one you will have downloaded from a specialized "testing" website is as easy as 1-2-3. Many of the new FTA receivers now have USB ports which allows you to simply use a USB key to overwrite the current software.
If you don't already own an FTA receiver, I bet that just might be the next birthday or Christmas gift your teenage kid will ask for. ;)
